Within the educational component, our Street Ties program provides presentations on the issue of sexual exploitation. Street Ties is working to enhance community awareness at all levels of the risks to youth in Central Alberta. This is a growing issue that threatens many youth today and one of the best ways to protect youth from it is to educate them on the realities.
The presentation begins by exploring the key individuals in sex work (prostitution) and explaining the difference between sex work and youth sexual exploitation. We explore different forms of exploitation, including peer based sexual exploitation, and identify strategies used in the recruitment of youth. The presentation looks at common risk factors, such as substance abuse and disruptive homes. The presentation will engage the group in a discussion and provide them with resources and supports to protect themselves from being a target. This includes an introduction to Alberta legislation: PChAD (Protection of Children Abusing Drugs Act) and PSECA (Protection of Sexually Exploited Children Act).
